Canvas 219 is an interactive sound installation that was designed for
multiple compositions. Through a recently developed interface, the viewer is
able to move liberally in front of the installation, which retrieves and sends data of the viewer's localized position. This data is sent to a computer, which is running a programmable system that uses the viewer's location to generate specialized sound. The array of speakers enhances the viewer's awareness of the position of sound and the programmable system allows for many behaviors that the sound can take on. The body can become an audio scrubber, manipulating sound as one walks through the space, or it could do something entirely different. Its behavior depends on what paintbrush the artist uses to color the sound; how they choose to write the program. The viewer is integrated into the piece as a source of cause and effect. If programmed to do so, the piece will only produce sound if user movement is detected. The interactive element enables the user to control what they hear by exploring the relationship that the body has with sound, space, and time. The piece depends on the viewer and their ability to *also*create and reflect into the installation, which challenges the boundary between composer and listener.
